One might think the endless plains of Kansas offer little more than wheat fields and existential ennui, but even here, humanity’s persistent need to leave a mark has resulted in a rather extensive collection of historical remnants. Over 1,600 distinct buildings , sites , districts , and objects have, for reasons best understood by bureaucrats and historians, earned a coveted spot on the National Register of Historic Places in Kansas. A testament to, well, something, these listings span 101 of the state’s 105 counties . One can only wonder what fascinating lack of historical gravitas afflicts the remaining four.

Current listings by county
The following are approximate tallies of current listings by county. These counts are based on entries in the National Register Information Database as of April 24, 2008 [2], supplemented by new weekly listings posted since then on the National Register of Historic Places website. [3] It’s worth noting, with a slight sigh of the perpetually disappointed, that new entries are added to the official Register on a weekly basis, and occasional delistings occur. Therefore, these counts are, by their very nature, approximate and not officially definitive. [4] Additionally, the numbers presented in this table meticulously exclude boundary increase and decrease listings, which merely modify the geographical scope of an existing property or district and are assigned separate National Register reference numbers. The precise figures for NRHP listings within each county are, of course, dutifully documented in their respective individual county list-articles, for those who truly crave granular detail.
