History

On October 3, 1951, the naval ashore unit Headquarters, Support Activities was created to support Allied Forces Southern Europe , and later the Sixth Fleet.^[2] In August 1953, the support unit became Commander, Subordinate command, U.S. Naval Forces Eastern Atlantic / Commander, Headquarters Support Activities, and was re‑designated U.S. Naval Activities, Italy / U.S. Naval Support Activity, Naples in November 1957.^[2] U.S. Naval Activities, Italy was consolidated with U.S. Naval Support Activity, Naples on August 8, 1966.^[2]

The base’s growth reflected the expanding U.S. naval presence in the Mediterranean after the Cold War‑era realignment of American forces in Europe. By the late 1960s, NSA Naples had become the logistical hub for a variety of fleet operations, ranging from surface warfare to submarine deployments.

Naval Hospital Naples was established at Agnano in 1967, and moved to Gricignano di Aversa in April 2003.^[3] The relocation consolidated medical services for U.S. service members stationed throughout the Mediterranean theater, providing a modern, fully equipped facility that supports everything from routine primary care to emergency trauma.

In 2005 the United States Naval Forces Europe headquarters moved from London to Naples, further cementing the city’s strategic importance for European‑African‑Middle Eastern command.^[4]

Beginning in the 1990s, the Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Naples (NCTS Naples) has been located at the Activity, providing critical communications and information technology support for fleet units operating in the region.

Site History

  • Built: 1951 (1951)
  • In use: 1951 – present

The complex originally comprised a modest set of administrative buildings and support warehouses. Over the ensuing decades, it expanded to include maintenance depots, fuel storage facilities, and a dedicated port area capable of accommodating amphibious assault ships and logistics vessels. The site’s evolution mirrors the broader transformation of the U.S. Navy from a primarily Atlantic‑focused force to a globally deployed, expeditionary organization.
