Princess Beatrice, Mrs Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi (Beatrice Elizabeth Mary; born 8 August 1988), is a member of the British royal family. She is the elder daughter of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson, which makes her a niece of the reigning monarch, King Charles III. At the moment of her birth, she was fifth in the line of succession to the British throne; as of 2025, through the inevitable march of time and the births of her cousins' children, she has descended to ninth.
Beatrice navigated the well-trodden path of upper-class education, attending St George's School, Ascot, before proceeding to study history at Goldsmiths, University of London, from which she emerged with a bachelor's degree. Her professional life has been a varied tour through roles at the Foreign Office and Sony Pictures. She currently holds the title of Vice-President of Strategic Partnerships at the software company Afiniti. Beyond her corporate endeavors, she lends her name and presence to a number of charitable organizations, most notably the Teenage Cancer Trust and Outward Bound.
In 2020, Beatrice's personal life became a matter of public record with her marriage to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, an English-born property developer who carries a lineage tracing back to the Italian nobility. The couple has since produced two daughters.
Early life and education
Beatrice arrived at 8:18 pm on 8 August 1988 at the Portland Hospital in London, a facility known for its discretion and popularity with the wealthy and famous. As the first child of the then Duke and Duchess of York, she was the fifth grandchild of the formidable duo of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Her baptism took place in the historic Chapel Royal at St James's Palace on 20 December 1988. The list of godparents reads like a carefully curated selection of family and society figures: Viscount Linley (her father's cousin, now the 2nd Earl of Snowdon); the Duchess of Roxburghe (now Lady Jane Dawnay); Peter Palumbo (now Lord Palumbo); Gabrielle Greenall (the Hon. Mrs John Greenall); and Carolyn Cotterell. Her name, Beatrice Elizabeth Mary, was a subject of speculation for nearly two weeks before its official announcement. Her younger sister, Princess Eugenie, followed in 1990.
The marital union of Beatrice's parents dissolved with a public but reportedly amicable divorce when she was seven years old. They agreed to joint custody, a remarkably modern arrangement for the time. Following the divorce, the Queen allocated £1.4 million to establish a trust fund for Beatrice and her sister, ensuring their financial security. The sisters' childhood was marked by frequent international travel, always accompanied by one or both of their co-parenting parents.
Beatrice's formal education commenced in 1991 at the independent Upton House School in Windsor. From there, she and her sister attended the independent Coworth Park School (which has since become Coworth Flexlands School). Beatrice's secondary education was completed at the independent St George's School in Ascot, where she was a pupil from 2000 to 2007. At the age of seven, she was diagnosed with dyslexia, a fact she made public in 2005, becoming a notable advocate for awareness. The diagnosis led to her delaying her GCSE examinations by a year. She continued at St George's for her A-Levels, securing an 'A' in drama and 'B' grades in history and film studies. In a testament to her standing among her peers, she was elected Head Girl in her final year and was also a member of the school choir. Her 18th birthday was celebrated in suitably royal fashion with a masked ball at Windsor Castle in July 2006. The official birthday portrait was captured by Count Nikolai von Bismarck.
In September 2008, Beatrice enrolled at Goldsmiths, University of London for a three-year course. She studied history and the history of ideas, graduating in 2011 with a BA degree, achieving a respectable 2:1 classification.
Career
In the summer of 2008, Beatrice dipped her toes into the world of commerce, gaining work experience as a sales assistant at the luxury department store Selfridges. She also spent a period working unpaid in the press office of the Foreign Office. Reports from 2008 suggested she harbored an interest in a career with the Financial Times website, a path not ultimately taken. In a curious intersection of royalty and cinema, Beatrice became the first member of her family to appear in a non-documentary film, taking on a small, non-speaking role as an extra in The Young Victoria (2009)—a film chronicling the accession of her own ancestor, Queen Victoria. She later held a paid internship at Sony Pictures, a position she resigned from following the major hacking incident that rocked the company in late 2014.
By April 2015, reports surfaced that Beatrice was planning a move to New York City. As of April 2017, she was established in a full-time job, dividing her time between London and New York. In her professional capacity, she is known as Beatrice York and serves as the Vice-President of Partnerships and Strategy at Afiniti, a software company specializing in artificial intelligence. She also spearheads an Afiniti program designed to engage senior business leaders globally in supporting women in leadership roles, which she promotes through charitable work and speaking engagements. Her CV also includes positions at Scale AI and LionTree Asset Management. She founded By-Eq Limited, an advisory group focused on enhancing emotional intelligence in the age of ascendant artificial intelligence.
In January 2022, it became public knowledge that Beatrice's taxpayer-funded police security had been withdrawn in 2011. The decision was reportedly influenced by her uncle, Charles (then Prince of Wales), as part of a broader cost-cutting initiative aimed at slimming down the monarchy's operational footprint. In 2025, Beatrice launched a new venture, Purpose Economy Intelligence Ltd, alongside Luis Alvarado Martínez, a Spanish executive with experience at the World Economic Forum. She serves as director for the company, which focuses on software development and management consulting services.
Duties and appointments
Beatrice has occasionally performed duties in support of the monarch. Alongside her grandfather, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, she accompanied Queen Elizabeth II to the traditional Royal Maundy services on 5 April 2012 in York. During the event, she engaged with parishioners, accepted flowers, and assisted the Queen in the ceremonial distribution of Maundy money to pensioners. In the run-up to the 2012 Summer Olympics, she had the honor of welcoming the Olympic flame on the steps of Harewood House near Leeds. In 2013, she and her sister undertook a promotional tour of Germany to represent British interests. A year later, in 2014, she visited the Isle of Wight, an island whose former Governor was her namesake, Princess Beatrice, a daughter of Queen Victoria. She also accompanied her father on an official engagement to the [United Arab Emirates](/United_Arab_ Emirates) on 24 November 2014.
During the period of official mourning for Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, Beatrice, her sister, and their six cousins performed a 15-minute vigil around the coffin of the late Queen as it lay in state at Westminster Hall—a solemn and historic moment. On 19 September, she joined the rest of the royal family for the state funeral.
With the accession of Charles III, Beatrice's position in the line of succession elevated her to eligibility for the role of Counsellor of State. This constitutional position allows her, along with a select few other senior royals, to carry out official duties on behalf of the Sovereign in the event of illness or absence from the country.
Personal life
Early relationships
In 2006, Princess Beatrice was briefly involved with Paolo Liuzzo, an Italo-American whose prior charge for assault and battery generated some tabloid controversy. For a decade, from 2006 until July 2016, she was in a long-term relationship with Virgin Galactic businessman Dave Clark.
Marriage and family

In March 2019, Beatrice attended a fundraising event at the National Portrait Gallery, London, accompanied by Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, an Anglo-Italian property developer. He is the only son of Alex Mapelli Mozzi, a former Alpine skier for the Great Britain Olympic team. The Mapelli Mozzi family was granted the title of Count in the Kingdom of Italy in 1913 by King Victor Emmanuel III, with the title passing to all legitimate male-line descendants. While this hereditary title may be used as a social courtesy, it ceased to have legal standing in Italy following the establishment of the republic in 1948 and holds no formal recognition in the United Kingdom.
The couple is thought to have begun their relationship in September 2018. They made a public appearance together at the May 2019 wedding of Lady Gabriella Windsor, Beatrice's second cousin once removed. Their engagement, which took place in Italy, was formally announced by her father's office on 26 September 2019.
Their wedding was originally set for 29 May 2020 at the Chapel Royal at St James's Palace, with a reception planned for the Buckingham Palace Gardens. However, global events intervened; first the reception and then the ceremony itself were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The wedding plans were also significantly affected by the fallout from her father's friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender. After Andrew's disastrous BBC interview led to his withdrawal from public duties, the wedding arrangements were scaled back.
Beatrice ultimately married Mapelli Mozzi in a private ceremony on 17 July 2020 at the Royal Chapel of All Saints at Royal Lodge, Windsor. While her father walked her down the aisle, he was conspicuously absent from the official wedding portraits released by Buckingham Palace. In a poignant gesture, her wedding dress was a remodelled Sir Norman Hartnell gown loaned by the Queen, and she wore the Queen Mary Fringe Tiara, the same tiara the Queen wore at her own wedding.
Through her marriage, Beatrice became a stepmother to Christopher Woolf (known as "Wolfie"), her husband's son from his previous relationship with architect Dara Huang. She gave birth to a daughter, Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi, on 18 September 2021 at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London. Sienna was christened at the Chapel Royal, St James's Palace, on 29 April 2022. Upon the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Sienna became tenth in the line of succession.
The couple initially resided in a four-bedroom apartment at St James's Palace before reportedly relocating to a manor house in the Cotswolds in late 2022.
Beatrice gave birth to their second daughter, Athena Elizabeth Rose, on 22 January 2025 at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, several weeks prematurely. Athena Mapelli Mozzi is eleventh in line to the British throne.
Charity work
In 2002, a young Beatrice visited children living with HIV in Russia. In the UK, she has been a supporter of Springboard for Children, a literacy project, and the Teenage Cancer Trust. In an interview coinciding with her 18th birthday, she expressed a desire to use her public position for charitable work, a path she had already begun by assisting her mother with various supported organizations.
In April 2010, Beatrice became the first member of the British royal family to complete the London Marathon, running to raise money for Children in Crisis. She is the patron of Forget-Me-Not Children's Hospice, an organization supporting children with life-shortening conditions.
At the April 2011 wedding of her cousin Prince William, Beatrice's choice of fascinator, an elaborate creation by Philip Treacy, became an unexpected focal point, attracting widespread attention and a significant amount of public mockery. Turning derision into opportunity, the headpiece was auctioned on eBay the following month for £81,000. The proceeds were split between two charities: UNICEF and Children in Crisis.
In November 2012, Beatrice became a patron of the York Musical Society. In April 2013, she became the royal patron of the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre, a charity she credits with helping her navigate her own academic challenges.
In 2016, Beatrice, her mother, and her sister Eugenie collaborated with contemporary artist Teddy McDonald on a painting titled Royal Love. It was painted at Royal Lodge, exhibited at Masterpiece London, and sold, with all proceeds donated to Children in Crisis. In 2018, that charity merged with Street Child, for which Beatrice now serves as an ambassador. She also supports Pitch@Palace, an initiative founded by her father to aid entrepreneurs.
Beatrice undertook a nine-day tour of South Asia in 2016, visiting Nepal, India, and Bhutan on behalf of the Franks Family Foundation and Jamgon Kongtrul Eyes Centres, a free cataract surgery program led by Nepali eye surgeon Dr. Sanduk Ruit. She later presented Dr. Ruit with an Asia Society Asia Game Changer Award in New York City.
She is the founder of Big Change, a charity she established with six friends to promote skills for young people "outside a traditional academic curriculum." To raise funds for the charity, she climbed Mont Blanc in 2012. In 2016, she joined Sir Richard Branson for the Virgin Strive Challenge, which involved climbing Mount Etna.
In a 2017 interview with Vogue, Beatrice spoke about her experiences with bullying over her fashion choices, helping to promote the anti-bullying book Be Cool Be Nice. Hello! later recognized her as one of the best-dressed royals. In May 2018, she attended the prestigious Met Gala in New York City. Later that year, she toured Laos to "raise the profile of the UK" and participated in a half-marathon for a children's charity.
In March 2019, Beatrice joined the board of the Outward Bound Trust as a trustee. She has also supported Kairos HQ, a non-profit for university entrepreneurs. In April 2022, as an ambassador for Made By Dyslexia, she and her husband attended the first World Dyslexia Assembly, hosted by Prince Carl Philip of Sweden.
In February 2023, Beatrice was named patron of the British Skin Foundation. In March 2025, she became a patron of Borne, a charity funding research into premature birth. In July 2025, she was appointed patron of the Chartered College of Teaching, a role once held by her grandfather. In November 2025, she was named deputy patron of Outward Bound Trust.
