Thai Sang Thai Party

The Thai Sang Thai Party (Thai: พรรคไทยสร้างไทย, romanized: Phak Thai Sang Thai; literally “Thais Build Thai[land] Party”) is a political entity in Thailand that emerged in 2021. It was established by a group of individuals who had previously been associated with the Pheu Thai Party , with Sudarat Keyuraphan taking a leading role.

History

The formal registration of the Thai Sang Thai Party occurred under registration number 3/2564 on March 23, 2021. Initially, Sa-is Boran and Wallop Chai-thaisong held the positions of party leader and secretary-general, respectively. The party’s first official headquarters was situated in Nong Song Hong District , Khon Kaen Province . Concurrently, a coordination center located in Bang Khen District, Bangkok , served as a temporary office. Later, a new, more permanent headquarters was constructed on Thoet Rachan Road, Sikan Subdistrict, Don Mueang District . A significant ceremony, involving the raising of a pillar, was held to mark the completion of this new facility on April 6, 2022.

The party officially commenced its operational activities with an event on December 10, 2021. This gathering was instrumental in outlining the party’s core policies and strategic direction. A notable development occurred on March 22, 2022, when the party decided to put forth aviation officer Sita Tiwaree as its candidate for the governor of Bangkok in the upcoming 2022 elections. This was followed by the nomination of candidates to contest all 50 constituencies for the Bangkok Metropolitan Council on March 30.

In July 2022, amidst reports that several party members were returning to the Pheu Thai Party , Sudarat Keyuraphan addressed the situation. She stated that these departures were not a cause for significant concern and affirmed the party’s commitment to continuing its work with undiminished vigor.

The Thai Sang Thai Party secured six seats in the 2023 general election . Following the election results, the party joined a coalition of parties opposed to the military junta, which was led by the Move Forward Party , the group that garnered the most seats. The objective of this coalition was to form the next government. However, despite possessing a majority in the lower house of parliament, this coalition faced an insurmountable obstacle in the form of the junta-appointed senate, which, under the constitution drafted during the junta’s rule, held a decisive vote in the selection of the prime minister. Consequently, the opportunity to form a government was transferred to the Pheu Thai Party , which had secured the second-highest number of seats. In a surprising turn of events, the Pheu Thai Party opted to form a new coalition with conservative and pro-military parties. The Thai Sang Thai Party, unwilling to align with pro-military factions, declined to join this new coalition and subsequently voted against the Pheu Thai Party’s candidate for prime minister, Srettha Thavisin.

As a member of the opposition, the Thai Sang Thai Party began to experience internal divisions. This discord became increasingly evident as some of its Members of Parliament (MPs) voted in favor of government initiatives, contradicting the party’s official stance. In January 2024, three of its MPs cast votes in support of the government’s budget bill, a move that precipitated the resignation of the party’s secretary-general. A subsequent development occurred in August 2024, following the removal of Srettha Thavisin as prime minister. All six Thai Sang Thai MPs cast their votes in favor of Paetongtarn Shinawatra to succeed him. This action triggered an ethics investigation, which ultimately resulted in the expulsion of one of its MPs. The expulsion was attributed to the MP’s persistent voting against the party’s position and their overt participation in the activities of another political party.
