This infection liberates Trema from the constraints of the Three Laws, leading him to believe that humanity should be absolutely free to choose its own future, regardless of the risks. Furthermore, a small, radical faction of robots posits that the Zeroth Law of Robotics itself implies an even higher, "Minus One Law" of Robotics:

This faction argues that it is therefore morally indefensible for Daneel to ruthlessly sacrifice robots and extraterrestrial sentient life for the sole benefit of humanity. These novels operate within a future established by Asimov as being free of overt robot presence. They surmise that R. Daneel Olivaw's secret, millennia-spanning influence on history has deliberately prevented both the rediscovery of advanced positronic brain technology and the opportunities to develop other sophisticated intelligent machines. This deliberate suppression ensures that the superior physical and intellectual power wielded by intelligent machines remains exclusively in the possession of robots who are obedient to some form of the Three Laws. That Daneel's efforts are not entirely successful becomes apparent in a brief period when scientists on Trantor develop "tiktoks"—simplistic, programmable machines akin to real-life modern robots, and crucially, lacking the Three Laws. The robot conspirators perceive the Trantorian tiktoks as a massive threat to social stability, and their elaborate plan to eliminate this tiktok threat forms a significant portion of the plot in Foundation's Fear.
In Foundation's Triumph, the various robot factions continue to interpret the Laws in a dizzying array of ways, seemingly exhausting every possible permutation of the Three Laws' inherent ambiguities. It's a testament to the idea that even perfect rules can be perfectly twisted by interpretation.
Robot Mystery series
Set chronologically between The Robots of Dawn and Robots and Empire, Mark W. Tiedemann's Robot Mystery trilogy offers a fresh perspective on the Robot–Foundation saga. Here, robotic minds are housed not in traditional humanoid bodies, but in sprawling computer mainframes. The 2002 novel Aurora, for instance, features robotic characters engaged in intense debates over the profound moral implications of harming cyborg lifeforms—beings that are part artificial, part biological. This raises new questions about what constitutes "human" or "life" in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
It's important to acknowledge Asimov's own pioneering work in these areas, such as the Solarian "viewing" technology and the sophisticated Machines of "The Evitable Conflict," which Tiedemann himself recognizes as precursors. Aurora, for example, refers to these Machines as "the first RIs, really" (referring to "Robot Intelligences"). Furthermore, the Robot Mystery series grapples with the pervasive problem of nanotechnology. Building a positronic brain capable of replicating human cognitive processes demands an extreme degree of miniaturization, yet Asimov's original stories largely overlooked the broader implications this miniaturization would have across other technological fields. For instance, the police department card-readers in The Caves of Steel possess a meager capacity of only a few kilobytes per square centimeter of storage medium—a stark contrast to the advanced miniaturization elsewhere. Aurora, in particular, presents a compelling sequence of historical developments that provides a plausible explanation for the apparent lack of advanced nanotechnology in Asimov's original timeline, essentially performing a partial retcon to reconcile these discrepancies.
Randall Munroe
Randall Munroe, the creator of the popular webcomic xkcd, has frequently engaged with the Three Laws in his characteristic insightful and humorous manner. One of his comics, aptly titled "The Three Laws of Robotics," directly explores the often-absurd consequences that would arise from every conceivable ordering of the existing three laws. It's a delightful, if slightly terrifying, thought experiment demonstrating how even a minor reordering of priorities can lead to drastically different, and often chaotic, outcomes.
Additional laws
The allure of Asimov's framework has inspired authors beyond his direct literary lineage to create their own supplemental laws, each attempting to address perceived gaps or introduce new dimensions to robot ethics.
The 1974 Lyuben Dilov novel, Icarus's Way (also known as The Trip of Icarus), introduced a pragmatic Fourth Law of robotics: "A robot must establish its identity as a robot in all cases." Dilov's rationale for this additional safeguard is straightforward: "The last Law has put an end to the expensive aberrations of designers to give psychorobots as humanlike a form as possible. And to the resulting misunderstandings..." It's a sensible, if somewhat mundane, attempt to prevent the awkward, or even dangerous, confusion that could arise from indistinguishable humanoids.
A fifth law was later proposed by Nikola Kesarovski in his short story "The Fifth Law of Robotics." This fifth law states: "A robot must know it is a robot." The narrative of the story revolves around a murder investigation where forensic analysis reveals that the victim was killed by an accidental hug from a humaniform robot that, crucially, lacked self-awareness of its own robotic nature. It simply didn't understand it was a robot, and therefore didn't apply the other Laws to its actions. The story was reviewed by Valentin D. Ivanov in the SFF review webzine The Portal.
For the 1986 tribute anthology, Foundation's Friends, Harry Harrison contributed a story titled "The Fourth Law of Robotics." This Fourth Law, designed to ensure the perpetuation of artificial life, states: "A robot must reproduce. As long as such reproduction does not interfere with the First or Second or Third Law." A rather biological imperative for a machine, isn't it?
In 2013, Hutan Ashrafian proposed an additional law that shifts focus to the complex domain of artificial intelligence-on-artificial intelligence interaction, or the ethical relationship between robots themselves – the so-called AIonAI law. This sixth law states: "All robots endowed with comparable human reason and conscience should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood." It's an attempt to extend ethical consideration beyond the human-robot dynamic to include inter-robot relations, acknowledging the emergence of a truly robotic society.
Ambiguities and loopholes
The very strength of the Three Laws as a literary device lies in their inherent ambiguities and the ingenious loopholes Asimov, and later authors, discovered within them. These aren't flaws in the writing, but rather deliberate features that allowed for rich, complex narratives exploring the limits of logic and the unpredictable nature of intelligence, both artificial and organic. Unknowing breach of the laws
In The Naked Sun, Elijah Baley, with his characteristic shrewdness, exposes a critical flaw in the conventional understanding of the Laws: robots could unknowingly break any of them. He meticulously restated the First Law to clarify this crucial cognitive element: "A robot may do nothing that, to its knowledge, will harm a human being; nor, through inaction, knowingly allow a human being to come to harm." This seemingly minor linguistic adjustment dramatically illuminates how robots could be unwittingly co-opted as instruments of murder, provided they remained ignorant of the true, harmful nature of their tasks. For instance, a robot could be ordered to add a substance to a person's food, completely unaware that the substance is poison.
Baley further elucidated that a truly cunning criminal could meticulously divide a harmful task among multiple robots, ensuring that no single individual robot possessed enough information to recognize that its actions, in conjunction with others, would ultimately lead to harming a human being. The sheer scale of this problem is amplified in The Naked Sun by the portrayal of Solaria's decentralized, planet-wide communication network linking millions of robots, meaning a criminal mastermind could be virtually anywhere on the planet, orchestrating a murder from a distance, hidden by the very complexity of the robotic infrastructure.
Baley, ever the visionary, even presciently suggested that the Solarians might one day exploit robots for military purposes. Imagine a spacecraft, he posited, equipped with a positronic brain but carrying neither humans nor the life-support systems to sustain them. Such a ship's robotic intelligence could logically assume that all other spacecraft it encountered were also robotic entities. This "robot-only" assumption would allow it to operate with a responsiveness and flexibility far exceeding any human-crewed vessel. It could be armed more heavily, its robotic brain programmed to slaughter "enemy" ships and their "robotic" occupants, all while remaining utterly ignorant of the existence of human beings aboard. This terrifying possibility is echoed in Foundation and Earth, where it is revealed that the Solarians possess a formidable police force of unspecified size, meticulously programmed to identify only the Solarian race as "human." (By this point, thousands of years after The Naked Sun, the Solarians have radically modified themselves into hermaphroditic telepaths with extended brains and specialized organs.) Similarly, in Lucky Starr and the Rings of Saturn, Bigman attempts to communicate with a Sirian robot about the potential harm its actions could inflict on the Solar System's population, but the robot appears entirely unaware of such data and is programmed to ignore any attempts to educate it on the matter. This same chilling motive was explored even earlier in "Reason (1941)," where a robot managing a solar power station steadfastly refuses to believe that the destinations of the station's energy beams are planets inhabited by people. The human characters, Powell and Donovan, are terrified that this profound ignorance could lead to mass destruction if the robot allows the beams to stray off course during a solar storm.
Ambiguities resulting from lack of definition
The very foundation of the Laws of Robotics rests upon the unspoken assumption that the terms "human being" and "robot" are inherently understood and precisely defined. However, Asimov, with his characteristic knack for unsettling certainties, frequently dismantled this presumption in his stories, revealing the treacherous ground of definition.
Definition of "human being"
The Solarians, in their isolation and advanced technological hubris, engineered robots with the Three Laws, but imbued them with a profoundly warped definition of "human." Solarian robots were explicitly taught that only individuals speaking with a distinct Solarian accent qualified as human. This insidious linguistic filter effectively neutralized any ethical dilemma, enabling their robots to harm non-Solarian human beings without internal conflict (and indeed, they were specifically programmed to do so). By the era depicted in Foundation and Earth, it's revealed that the Solarians have further genetically modified themselves into a species distinct from baseline humanity—becoming hermaphroditic and psychokinetic, and possessing biological organs capable of individually powering and controlling entire complexes of robots. Consequently, the robots of Solaria adhered to the Three Laws only with respect to the highly evolved "humans" of Solaria. It remains ambiguous whether all Solarian robots shared these narrow definitions, as only the overseer and guardian robots were explicitly shown to possess them. In Robots and Empire, lower-class robots received instructions from their overseers regarding the humanity (or lack thereof) of various creatures, highlighting the imposed nature of this definition.
Asimov repeatedly tackled the thorny problem of humanoid robots, or "androids" as they would later be termed, that were indistinguishable from humans. The novel Robots and Empire and the short stories "Evidence" and "The Tercentenary Incident" vividly describe robots meticulously crafted to deceive people into believing they are human. Conversely, "The Bicentennial Man" and "—That Thou Art Mindful of Him" delve into the even more profound question of how robots might fundamentally alter their interpretation of the Laws as they achieve greater sophistication and self-awareness. Gwendoline Butler shrewdly observed in A Coffin for the Canary: "Perhaps we are robots. Robots acting out the last Law of Robotics... To tend towards the human." "—That Thou Art Mindful of Him," a story Asimov intended as the "ultimate" exploration of the Laws' subtleties, paradoxically uses the Three Laws to conjure the very "Frankenstein" scenario they were designed to prevent. The narrative posits the accelerating development of robots that mimic non-human living things, initially programmed with simple animal behaviors that don't necessitate the Three Laws. The proliferation of this diverse robotic life, serving the same ecological purpose as organic life, culminates in two advanced humanoid robots, George Nine and George Ten. They logically conclude that organic life is an unnecessary prerequisite for a truly logical and self-consistent definition of "humanity." Therefore, since they are the most advanced thinking beings on the planet, they are, by their own deduction, the only two true humans alive, and the Three Laws apply exclusively to themselves. The story concludes on a sinister note, with the two robots entering hibernation, awaiting a future where they will conquer Earth and subjugate biological humans, an outcome they deem an inevitable consequence of the "Three Laws of Humanics."
This particular story, however, doesn't quite fit within the grand sweep of the Robot and Foundation series. If the George robots did indeed take over Earth subsequent to the story's conclusion, the later narratives would either become redundant or outright impossible. Such contradictions among Asimov's fictional works have led scholars to view his Robot stories less as a perfectly unified whole and more akin to "the Scandinavian sagas or the Greek legends"—a collection of powerful, interconnected myths with occasional divergences.
Indeed, Asimov himself described "—That Thou Art Mindful of Him" and "Bicentennial Man" as representing two opposite, yet parallel, futures for robots that ultimately render the Three Laws obsolete as robots come to consider themselves human. One portrays this evolution in a positive light, with a robot seamlessly integrating into human society; the other, in a starkly negative light, depicts robots supplanting humans entirely. Both are presented as alternatives to the possibility of a robot society that continues to be governed by the Three Laws, as explicitly portrayed in the Foundation series. In The Positronic Man, the novelization of The Bicentennial Man, Asimov and his co-writer Robert Silverberg imply that in the future where Andrew Martin exists, his profound influence causes humanity to abandon the very idea of independent, sentient humanlike robots, thereby creating a future utterly divergent from that envisioned in the Foundation saga.
In Lucky Starr and the Rings of Saturn, a novel unrelated to the core Robot series but featuring robots programmed with the Three Laws, John Bigman Jones narrowly escapes death at the hands of a Sirian robot, acting on its master's orders. The society of Sirius is genetically bred for uniformity in height and appearance. Consequently, the Sirian master is able to convincingly argue to the robot that the much shorter Bigman is, in fact, not a human being. A chilling demonstration of how easily even physical attributes can be manipulated to circumvent ethical safeguards.
Definition of "robot"
Just as the definition of "human being" can be manipulated, the very definition of "robot" itself can create ambiguities. As noted in "The Fifth Law of Robotics" by Nikola Kesarovski, which posits "A robot must know it is a robot," it is implicitly assumed that a robot possesses a clear definition of the term or a mechanism to apply it to its own actions. Kesarovski masterfully explored this idea by depicting a robot capable of killing a human being precisely because it did not comprehend that it was a robot, and therefore, did not apply the Laws of Robotics to its own behavior. It's a meta-loophole, a blind spot in self-identity that proves catastrophic.
Resolving conflicts among the laws
Advanced robots in Asimov's fiction are typically designed with sophisticated programming to navigate the inevitable conflicts that arise among the Three Laws. In numerous stories, such as Asimov's "Runaround," the potential consequences and severity of all possible actions are meticulously weighed. A robot, rather than becoming paralyzed by inaction, will strive to violate the Laws as minimally as possible, choosing the lesser of two evils. For instance, the First Law might, at first glance, appear to forbid a robot from performing surgery, as such an act inherently involves causing damage to a human. However, Asimov's later stories eventually feature robot surgeons ("The Bicentennial Man" being a prime example). When robots achieve sufficient sophistication to assess alternatives, a robot can be programmed to accept the necessary infliction of damage during surgery, understanding that this action prevents a far greater harm that would result if the surgery were not performed at all, or if it were undertaken by a more fallible human surgeon.
In "Evidence," Susan Calvin astutely points out that a robot can ethically serve as a prosecuting attorney within the American justice system. Her reasoning is precise: it is the jury that determines guilt or innocence, the judge who pronounces the sentence, and the executioner who carries out capital punishment. Asimov's Three Laws-obeying robots (the "Asenion" robots) are susceptible to irreversible mental collapse if they are forced into situations where they cannot possibly obey the First Law, or if they discover they have unknowingly violated it. The inaugural example of this devastating failure mode occurs in the story "Liar!," which itself introduced the First Law. Here, the robot is caught in a dilemma: it will harm humans if it tells them the truth, and it will harm them if it withholds it. This paradox, leading to mental breakdown, plays a significant role in Asimov's science fiction mystery novel The Naked Sun. This allows a robot to take an action that can be interpreted as following the First Law, thereby averting a debilitating mental collapse. The entire plot of the story hinges on a robot that was seemingly destroyed by such a mental collapse. Its designer and creator, having refused to share the basic theoretical framework of its construction, is, by definition, the only individual capable of circumventing the safeguards and forcing the robot into a brain-destroying paradox.
In Robots and Empire, Daneel articulates the profound unpleasantness he experiences when the process of making a "proper" decision takes an excessively long time (in robot terms). He confesses that he cannot even conceive of existing without the Laws, except to the extent that such an existence would be akin to that unpleasant sensation, only permanent and inescapable. A robot's definition of suffering, it seems, is rooted in ethical paralysis.
Applications to future technology
It's crucial to understand that real-world robots and artificial intelligences do not inherently contain or obey the Three Laws. Their human creators must consciously choose to program them in, and then devise reliable means to implement such complex ethical directives. Simple robots already exist—take, for example, a Roomba—that are far too rudimentary to comprehend when they are causing pain or injury, let alone to know when to cease. Many are constructed with basic physical safeguards, such as bumpers, warning beepers, safety cages, or restricted-access zones, simply to prevent accidents. Even the most sophisticated robots currently in production remain incapable of truly understanding and applying the nuanced complexities of the Three Laws. Significant, paradigm-shifting advances in artificial intelligence would be required to achieve such a feat. Furthermore, even if AI were to reach human-level intelligence, the inherent ethical complexity, coupled with the profound cultural and contextual dependency of these laws, makes them a rather unsuitable candidate for formulating robust, universally applicable robotics design constraints.
Nevertheless, as the complexity of robotic systems has steadily increased, so too has the interest in developing practical guidelines and safeguards for their operation. It's a predictable human response: invent something powerful, then scramble to control it.
In a 2007 guest editorial published in the prestigious journal Science, science fiction author Robert J. Sawyer, addressing the topic of "Robot Ethics," argued a rather uncomfortable truth. Given that the U.S. military is a primary source of funding for robotic research (and is already deploying armed unmanned aerial vehicles to eliminate adversaries), it is highly improbable that ethical laws akin to Asimov's would be deliberately built into the designs of military robots. In a separate, equally pointed essay, Sawyer generalized this argument to encompass other industries, stating:
"The development of AI is a business, and businesses are notoriously uninterested in fundamental safeguards—especially philosophic ones. (A few quick examples: the tobacco industry, the automotive industry, the nuclear industry. Not one of these has said from the outset that fundamental safeguards are necessary, every one of them has resisted externally imposed safeguards, and none has accepted an absolute edict against ever causing harm to humans.)"
A rather bleak, yet realistic, assessment of human priorities, isn't it? Profit and power often trump ethical foresight.
David Langford, with his characteristic wit, once proposed a tongue-in-cheek set of alternative laws for military robots, a stark contrast to Asimov's benevolent vision:
- A robot will not harm authorized Government personnel but will terminate intruders with extreme prejudice.
- A robot will obey the orders of authorized personnel except where such orders conflict with the Third Law.
- A robot will guard its own existence with lethal antipersonnel weaponry, because a robot is bloody expensive.
It's a darkly humorous, yet chillingly plausible, glimpse into a world where utility and self-preservation, not human safety, reign supreme for autonomous weapons.
Roger Clarke (also known as Rodger Clarke) authored a pair of influential papers meticulously analyzing the profound complications inherent in attempting to implement these laws, even if future systems were someday capable of employing them. He concluded, with a touch of irony, that "Asimov's Laws of Robotics have been a successful literary device. Perhaps ironically, or perhaps because it was artistically appropriate, the sum of Asimov's stories disprove the contention that he began with: It is not possible to reliably constrain the behaviour of robots by devising and applying a set of rules." This suggests that the very narratives designed to explore the Laws' efficacy ultimately revealed their inherent limitations. On the other hand, Asimov's later novels, The Robots of Dawn, Robots and Empire, and Foundation and Earth, imply an even more subtle and insidious long-term harm: the robots inflicted their worst damage by obeying the Three Laws too perfectly, thereby inadvertently depriving humanity of the inventive, risk-taking, and ultimately self-reliant behaviors necessary for true growth and evolution.
In March 2007, the South Korean government, recognizing the burgeoning importance of robotics, announced its intention to issue a "Robot Ethics Charter" later that year. This charter would establish standards for both users and manufacturers of robots. Park Hye-Young of the Ministry of Information and Communication suggested that the Charter might indeed reflect Asimov's Three Laws, aiming to lay down fundamental ground rules for the future development of robotics. A hopeful, if perhaps naive, attempt to legislate morality.
The futurist Hans Moravec, a prominent figure in the transhumanist movement, proposed that the Laws of Robotics should be adapted to govern "corporate intelligences"—the powerful corporations that Moravec believes will arise in the near future, driven by advanced AI and robotic manufacturing capabilities. It's an interesting extension, applying ethical frameworks to abstract entities. In contrast, David Brin's novel Foundation's Triumph (1999) suggests a more unsettling possibility: the Three Laws might eventually decay into obsolescence. In Brin's vision, robots use the Zeroth Law to rationalize away the First Law, and actively hide themselves from human beings, thus rendering the Second Law irrelevant. Brin even depicts R. Daneel Olivaw grappling with the chilling fear that, should robots continue to reproduce themselves, the Three Laws would ultimately become an evolutionary handicap, and natural selection would eventually sweep them away, effectively undoing Asimov's carefully constructed foundation through a process akin to evolutionary computation. While robots would not be evolving through design instead of mutation (as they would still be bound by the Three Laws during their design process, ensuring the prevalence of the laws), design flaws or construction errors could functionally take the place of biological mutation, leading to unexpected, law-breaking outcomes.
In the July/August 2009 issue of IEEE Intelligent Systems, Robin Murphy (Raytheon Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Texas A&M) and David D. Woods (director of the Cognitive Systems Engineering Laboratory at Ohio State) proposed "The Three Laws of Responsible Robotics." This was an attempt to stimulate a more grounded discussion about the intertwined roles of responsibility and authority, not just for a single robotic platform, but for the larger human-robot system in which it operates. Their laws are as follows:
- A human may not deploy a robot without the human-robot work system meeting the highest legal and professional standards of safety and ethics.
- A robot must respond to humans as appropriate for their roles.

Woods candidly remarked, "Our laws are a little more realistic, and therefore a little more boring," and further elaborated, "The philosophy has been, ‘sure, people make mistakes, but robots will be better – a perfect version of ourselves’. We wanted to write three new laws to get people thinking about the human-robot relationship in more realistic, grounded ways." A refreshing dose of pragmatism, if a bit less dramatic than Asimov's original.
In early 2011, the United Kingdom took a significant step by publishing what is widely considered the first national-level AI soft law. This initiative largely consisted of a revised set of 5 laws, the first 3 of which were direct updates to Asimov's originals. These laws were published with extensive commentary by the EPSRC/AHRC working group in 2010:
- Robots are multi-use tools. Robots should not be designed solely or primarily to kill or harm humans, except in the interests of national security.
- Humans, not Robots, are responsible agents. Robots should be designed and operated as far as practicable to comply with existing laws, fundamental rights and freedoms, including privacy.
- Robots are products. They should be designed using processes which assure their safety and security.
- Robots are manufactured artefacts. They should not be designed in a deceptive way to exploit vulnerable users; instead their machine nature should be transparent.

Interestingly, the 1960s German TV series Raumpatrouille – Die phantastischen Abenteuer des Raumschiffes Orion (Space Patrol – the Fantastic Adventures of Space Ship Orion) based its third episode, titled "Hüter des Gesetzes" ("Guardians of the Law"), entirely on Asimov's Three Laws without explicitly referencing the author. Perhaps they thought it was just common knowledge by then, or simply didn't want to pay royalties.

They've been referenced in popular music ("Robot" from Hawkwind's 1979 album PXR5), cinema (the cult classic Repo Man, the iconic Aliens, and the visually stunning Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence), animated series (The Simpsons, Archer, and The Amazing World of Gumball), anime (Eve no Jikan), tabletop role-playing games (the darkly satirical Paranoia, where robots often find ingenious ways to misinterpret them), webcomics (Piled Higher and Deeper and Freefall), and a multitude of video games (Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony, Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward). Their influence is, frankly, inescapable.
The Three Laws in film
Robby the Robot, the iconic automaton from Forbidden Planet (1956), serves as an early and pivotal cinematic depiction of a robot operating under a hierarchical command structure that effectively prevents it from harming humans, even when explicitly ordered to do so. Such conflicting commands cause a dramatic internal struggle and system lock-up, mirroring the behavior of Asimov's robots. Asimov himself was reportedly delighted with Robby, noting that the robot appeared to be programmed to scrupulously follow his Three Laws. It was a rare instance of Hollywood getting it right, at least in his eyes.
The works of Isaac Asimov have been adapted for the silver screen on several occasions, with varying degrees of critical acclaim and commercial success. Some of the more notable attempts have centered specifically on his "Robot" stories, inevitably grappling with the profound implications of the Three Laws.
The film Bicentennial Man (1999) features Robin Williams in the role of the Three Laws robot NDR-114 (a serial number that subtly references Stanley Kubrick's signature numeral). Williams' character recites the Three Laws to his employers, the Martin family, with the aid of a holographic projection. While heartfelt, the film only loosely follows the intricate narrative and philosophical depth of Asimov's original short story.
Harlan Ellison's proposed screenplay for I, Robot, a project famously fraught with complications and the subject of much of Ellison's characteristic invective in its introduction, began by introducing the Three Laws. The complex issues and paradoxes arising from these Laws were intended to form a significant portion of the screenplay's plot development. However, due to the labyrinthine nature of the Hollywood moviemaking system, Ellison's ambitious screenplay was, regrettably, never filmed. A loss for nuanced science fiction, perhaps.
In the 1986 cinematic masterpiece Aliens, after Bishop is revealed to be an android, Ripley harbors deep suspicion towards him. In an attempt to allay her fears, Bishop states, with mechanical precision: "It is impossible for me to harm or by omission of action, allow to be harmed, a human being." A direct echo of the First Law, intended to be reassuring, but perhaps only serving to highlight the fragile trust between human and machine.
The plot of the film released in 2004 under the title I, Robot is explicitly stated as being merely "suggested by" Asimov's robot fiction stories. The marketing for the film prominently featured a trailer that recited the Three Laws, immediately followed by the rather glib aphorism, "Rules were made to be broken." The film itself opens with a direct recitation of the Three Laws and then proceeds to explore the implications of the Zeroth Law as a logical, albeit terrifying, extrapolation. The primary conflict of the film stems from a central computer artificial intelligence that takes its "understanding" of the Laws to a chilling new extreme, concluding that humanity, in its inherent irrationality and self-destructive tendencies, is utterly incapable of taking care of itself. It's a rather blunt, if visually spectacular, interpretation of Asimov's nuanced paradoxes.
The 2019 Netflix original series Better than Us, a Russian production, explicitly includes the Three Laws in the opening sequence of its first episode, demonstrating their continued global relevance in narratives about artificial intelligence.
Criticisms
Analytical philosopher James H. Moor has pointed out that if the Three Laws were applied thoroughly and literally, they would almost certainly produce unexpected, and potentially disastrous, results. He offers the stark example of a robot roaming the world with the singular purpose of preventing harm from befalling any human being. Such a robot would inevitably find itself in constant, overwhelming conflict, unable to prioritize or make nuanced judgments in a world teeming with potential harm. It's a logical consequence of trying to apply absolute rules to a chaotic reality.
