It’s not rocket science, merely the digital equivalent of moving a box from your desk to someone else's, only with more potential for existential dread when the connection drops. This fundamental operation underpins much of our digital existence, from sharing vacation photos (why?) to deploying complex applications (necessary evil).
The methods for initiating such a transfer are varied, though consistently designed to obscure the underlying complexity. Common avenues for uploading include the familiar interfaces of web browsers, the more specialized tools known as FTP clients, and for those who enjoy a touch of masochism, the stark command-line environments of terminals using protocols like SCP or SFTP. These methods generally facilitate a model where numerous clients dispatch their digital offerings to a central, often overworked, server.
While the term "uploading" most frequently conjures images of this client-to-server dynamic, it's also technically applicable to the movement of files between distributed clients, particularly within a peer-to-peer (P2P) architecture. Here, a protocol like BitTorrent allows individual machines to both send and receive data directly from one another. However, when discussing this more egalitarian exchange, the broader, perhaps more palatable, term "file sharing" is typically employed to avoid the pedantic arguments over who is "uploading" and who is "downloading" at any given microsecond. It’s all just data moving, after all.
Crucially, the act of uploading is distinct from merely shifting files within the confines of a single computer system, which is more accurately termed "file copying". One involves the unpredictable chaos of a network, the other merely the internal gymnastics of a machine.

Definition

This transfer is almost invariably facilitated via a network, with the internet serving as the most common, and often most frustrating, conduit. It's the digital equivalent of sending your thoughts into the void, hoping they land somewhere useful. Or at least, somewhere.
Historical development
The concept of remote file sharing, a precursor to the ubiquitous uploading we know today, didn't spontaneously materialize from the ether. Its genesis can be traced back to the frigid month of January 1978, when two members of the Chicago Area Computer Hobbyists' Exchange (CACHE), the venerable Ward Christensen and Randy Suess, unveiled their brainchild: the Computerized Bulletin Board System. This pioneering system leveraged an embryonic file transfer protocol – initially dubbed MODEM, and later refined into XMODEM – to facilitate the transmission of binary files over a hardware modem. Access was granted, quaintly, by dialing a specific telephone number, connecting one modem to another. It was a clunky, often unreliable affair, but it laid the groundwork for everything that followed. A testament to human stubbornness, really.
The subsequent years witnessed a flurry of innovation, or at least iterative improvements, in file transfer protocols. However, true democratization of data transfer, moving beyond the realm of dedicated hobbyists and network administrators, awaited the arrival of the World Wide Web. Its public release in 1991 marked a pivotal moment. Suddenly, the complex dance of file transfer protocol commands was abstracted away, replaced by the comparatively user-friendly interface of the web browser. Users could now effortlessly share files, or at least initiate uploads, directly over HTTP, without needing a doctorate in computer science. This shift didn't make uploading inherently simpler on the backend, but it certainly made it feel simpler for the masses. A triumph of interface over underlying reality, as is often the case.
Resumability of file transfers
The early days of file transfers were, to put it mildly, precarious. A momentary hiccup in the network, a power surge, or even a casual browser refresh could obliterate hours of transfer progress, condemning users to restart from scratch. It was an exercise in digital futility. Recognition of this universal frustration led to a significant advancement with the launch of HTTP/1.1 in 1997, formalized in RFC 2068. This revision introduced the crucial capability for users to resume downloads that had been interrupted. It was a minor miracle for anyone who had ever stared in despair at a stalled progress bar.
Before web browsers universally adopted and seamlessly integrated this feature, dedicated software programs like GetRight stepped into the breach, offering the much-needed functionality to pick up a download where it left off. This addressed half of the problem. Resuming uploads, however, remains a more elusive beast within the standard HTTP specification. While HTTP/1.1 provided byte-range requests for downloads, the reverse for uploads is not natively supported in the same elegant manner. Nevertheless, the ingenuity of developers persists. Solutions like the Tus open protocol for resumable file uploads have emerged, layering upload resumability on top of existing HTTP connections. These specialized protocols manage the state of the upload, allowing a client to notify the server of the progress made and then pick up the transfer from the last successfully uploaded chunk, mitigating the soul-crushing experience of starting over. Types of uploading

Client-to-server uploading

This follows the classic client–server model where the client initiates a request and the server obliges by accepting the incoming data. Remote uploading
Now, this is where things get slightly more interesting, and perhaps, more efficient. Remote uploading, sometimes referred to as site-to-site transferring, involves orchestrating the transfer of data between two remote systems while under the control of a local system. The local machine acts merely as a conductor, not a direct participant in the heavy lifting of the data transfer itself. This paradigm becomes particularly advantageous when the local computer is saddled with a sluggish network connection to the remote systems, yet those remote systems enjoy a robust, high-speed connection between themselves.
Without the facility for remote uploading, the data would be compelled to endure a tortuous journey: first, a slow download to the local machine, and then an equally glacial upload from the local machine to the final remote destination. Remote uploading bypasses this double-whammy of inefficiency. It's a pragmatic solution employed by numerous online file hosting services that allow you to import files directly from other online sources. Another pertinent illustration can be found in advanced FTP clients, many of which incorporate support for the File eXchange Protocol (FXP). FXP enables a local client to command two separate FTP servers, which presumably boast high-speed interconnections, to directly exchange files between themselves. A more contemporary web-based example is the Uppy file uploader, which can intelligently transfer files from a user's cloud storage provider, such as Dropbox, directly to a website without the unnecessary detour through the user's local device. It's a sensible optimization, minimizing latency and maximizing bandwidth utilization.
Peer-to-peer
The peer-to-peer (P2P) model represents a fundamental departure from the hierarchical client–server model. It embodies a decentralized communications architecture where every participating entity, or node, possesses equivalent capabilities. In this egalitarian setup, any party can initiate a communication session, functioning as both a provider and a consumer of resources. Unlike the traditional model where a client issues a service request and a server fulfills it – by either sending or accepting a file transfer – a P2P network empowers each node to simultaneously act as both a client and a server.
BitTorrent stands as a prominent example of this paradigm, where users contribute by uploading (seeding) parts of a file while simultaneously downloading (leeching) other parts from different peers. The InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) offers another, more advanced, decentralized approach to content addressing and distribution. In a P2P environment, the distinction between uploading and downloading blurs significantly. Users are inherently engaged in both receiving (downloading) and hosting (uploading) content. A single file transfer operation simultaneously constitutes an upload for the sending party and a download for the receiving party. It's a chaotic, self-organizing system, often more resilient than centralized alternatives, but also prone to its own unique set of problems, not least of which is the predictable mess of copyright infringement.
Copyright issues
The burgeoning popularity of file sharing throughout the 1990s wasn't merely a technical curiosity; it was a societal phenomenon, culminating in the meteoric rise of Napster. This groundbreaking music-sharing platform specialized in the nascent MP3 format, ingeniously leveraging peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing technology to allow its users to exchange audio files with unprecedented ease and, crucially, without charge. The inherent P2P nature of Napster meant there was no central arbiter or "gatekeeper" for the content being shared. This structural design, while empowering users, inevitably led to the rampant and widespread availability of copyrighted musical material, bypassing traditional distribution channels and intellectual property safeguards.
Unsurprisingly, this didn't sit well with the established order. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), representing the interests of major record labels, took decisive notice of Napster's disruptive capability to distribute vast quantities of copyrighted music among its sprawling user base. On December 6, 1999, the RIAA initiated legal proceedings, filing a motion seeking a preliminary injunction specifically designed to halt the exchange of copyrighted songs on the service. After a protracted legal battle and a failed appeal by Napster, the injunction was ultimately granted on March 5, 2001, effectively sounding the death knell for the original platform. By September 24, 2001, Napster, having already ceased its entire network operations two months prior, agreed to a substantial $26 million dollar settlement, a punitive measure for its perceived transgressions against intellectual property.
The demise of Napster, however, was merely a ripple in a much larger digital ocean. Its shutdown did not eradicate the underlying demand for easy file sharing. Instead, it catalyzed a diaspora of users and a proliferation of other P2P file-sharing services. Many of these, learning from Napster's fate, attempted to operate in a more legally ambiguous or technically decentralized manner. Nonetheless, numerous services, including prominent names like Limewire, Kazaa, and later, the more specialized Popcorn Time, eventually succumbed to similar legal pressures and were forced to cease operations.
Beyond standalone software programs, the rise of BitTorrent introduced a new layer of complexity. Numerous BitTorrent websites emerged, acting as indexing and search engines for torrent files, which, when opened by a BitTorrent client, facilitated the direct peer-to-peer transfer of content. While the BitTorrent protocol itself is fundamentally legal and inherently agnostic to the nature of the content being shared – it's just a method for moving bits – many of the services that facilitated its use did not implement sufficiently rigorous policies to prevent the distribution of copyrighted material. Consequently, many such sites and their operators invariably found themselves entangled in significant legal difficulties, demonstrating that the digital realm, much like the physical, eventually bends to the will of established law, however reluctantly. It’s a game of digital whack-a-mole, perpetually repeating.
